Program structure

  2. Do you have a formal contractual relationship with the state medical board? Yes
    • The Colorado Medical Practice Act establishes the scope of services and funding mechanism for a "physician peer health assistance" provider. The Board of Medical Examiners (BME) selects the provider based on competitive bids (five year cycle) and authorizes an annual funding level. Peer health assistance fees are collected from physicians at the biannual license renewal; these funds are restricted and may not be awarded for any other purpose.

Funding

  • Hospital and private contributions (12 percent)
  • Participant fees: fees are charged to physicians who do not hold a Colorado license (5 percent)

Monitoring requirements

Chemical dependency

  1. Length of contract: Depends on the diagnosis and ongoing treatment. Those having stipulated medical licenses with the BME are typically five years.
  2. Random urine drug screen frequency: Depends on current assessment, diagnosis and progress in recovery
  3. Support (self help) group requirements: Depends on current assessment, diagnosis and progress in recovery
  4. Support (self help) group frequency: Depends on current assessment, diagnosis and progress in recovery
  5. Therapy or treatment requirement: Each client's requirements are determined on an individual basis
  6. Work or practice monitor requirement: Depends on diagnostic assessment and individual circumstances
